How to Give a Hickey
Tuesday, November 21st, 2006A hickey is a discoloration of the skin caused by broken blood vessels beneath the skin - it’s like a bruise, and it appears after a prolonged suction of the mouth against the skin. Hickeys are a mark of love or possession.
You can give someone a hickey just about anywhere. The most common place is, of course, the side of the neck, because the capillaries i.e. the tiny blood vessels, that are broken during a hickey are close to the surface of the skin. This is also the most easily visible place, and while visibility is usually intended, you may want to give a hickey elsewhere where it is more easily covered (the belly or the inner thigh).
Place your lips against the skin, leaving your mouth open slightly in the middle. Your lips should be parted as though you’re saying the letter “O” . Make a good seal with your lips against the skin, and suck the skin as though you are trying to suck it into your mouth. Continue doing suction for at least 30 seconds, even more. The suction will break the blood vessels beneath the skin and turn the circular area bright red.
Wait a few minutes for the hickey to appear. It will probably get bigger or darker in the next few hours.
Two warnings. First, don’t bite! Suction is all that is required to give a hickey. If you use your teeth, you are not giving a hickey - you are biting. Second, receiving a hickey is painful. Make sure to get your partner’s permission before you do this.
That’s it - now you know the most primitive way of saying “This person belongs to me!”.
